What We Do

Wolsingham Wayfarers are more than just a walking group...!

Founded in 1993, Wolsingham Wayfarers are a registered charity which works closely with land owners and local bodies to monitor and maintain the 140 miles of Public Rights of Way in the parish of Wolsingham & Thornley. Nestled in the heart of Weardale in County Durham, we promote walking for both health and social benefits, while encouraging visitors to explore the natural beauty of the area through free walk leaflets and free guided walks.

Our small group of volunteers work closely with Landowners and public bodies to monitor and maintain the 140 miles of public footpaths in our area.

Wolsingham Wayfarers in Action

Monitoring & Maintaining Public Rights of Way

We have produced and distributed thousands of free copies of our popular walking leaflets (now on their 7th print edition) with local circular walks ranging from 1.5 miles to 13 miles.

In conjunction with The Weardale Area Action Partnership and The Weardale Railway we've also produced a leaflet for the neighbouring town of Stanhope.

(Our leaflets are available free of charge from many local outlets - or click on a leaflet below to download your own copy).

Free Walk Leaflets

Free Guided Walks

We host a free guided walk every second Saturday of each month leaving Wolsingham Town Hall at 10am.

All our walks are circular and are typically between 5 and 10 miles in length. Walks are open to anyone able to negotiate countryside obstacles such as stiles and muddy patches!

We walk at the pace of the slowest walker so our Walk Leader will make regular stops to allow the back marker to catch up. Once everyone is ready, we set off again!

Weather permitting - we stop around the halfway point for a picnic break so bring a snack!

Promoting Wolsingham as a Walking Destination

Wolsingham Wayfarers have secured accreditation for Wolsingham as a member of the national ‘Walkers are Welcome’ network…

…a nationwide initiative to encourage towns and villages to be welcoming to walkers. Look out for the logo in local businesses.

Making walking accessible to all

To make walking in Wolsingham accessible to everyone, we've constructed a 1.5 mile pushchair and wheelchair friendly path which encircles Wolsingham village (known as The Family Walk).

Local Access Forum

Wolsingham Wayfarers have representatives on the Durham County Council Local Access Forum (LAF). The LAF is a statutory body that advises Durham County Council on land access issues including the Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) and Open Access in County Durham.

The LAF membership is made up of people whose knowledge and experience relates to land access. There is a great range of expertise within the LAF, with both user and landowner interests being represented fairly.

The forum meets several times a year to discuss various access issues. These meetings are open to the public and the minutes of previous meetings are available by contacting the forum secretary. The forum's annual reports also outline its activities and include details of its members.

Recognition

In 2014 Wolsingham Wayfarers won "Volunteer Group of the Year" at the County Durham Environment Awards. This was for "an outstanding contribution to the improvement, understanding and promotion of the quality and appearance of the environment of the Weardale countryside and the commitment of all volunteers".
